thank you, sal. we begin with developing news this morning. a coast guard is searching for four family members who we first reported missing off the san mateo county coast. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now. tara, you just got new information from the coast guard. >> yes. we just got off the phone with a coast guard. here's the thing they don't know where the people were from. there are no reports of missing people off the coast in california. it could possibly be from hawaii. they don't even know where they were headed. it's supposed to be about 50 miles southwest of santa cruz at the moment. and last night around 4:30 their distress call came in. their 29-foot craft was taking in water and they had no lifeboats on board. they were going to string a cooler and life ring together. we learned there was a mother, father, and four-year-old son on board as well as a cousin who was under the age of eight. >> we have a 130 on scene and

we have the coast guard cutter turn on scene. they are conducting search patterns and at first light we'll have one of the 55 helicopters wept to refuel they will be getting back up after first light as well as the 60 helicopter from the 129th rescue wing. and i believe around 6:00 so hopefully soon we will be getting the 210-foot cutter the coast guard cutter alert that is stationed out of port angeles washington. >> reporter: now high winds and rough seas kick in over the weekend and warnings went out but it is possible if this family was from out of the area they had no idea. coming up we will tell you what their chances of survival are. i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. we are also tracking over night news in sonoma county where a fire caused about $50,000 in damage to a roanoke park home. you can see the huge flames in this video. that fire at an empty home on

alma avenue started at about 11:30 last night. the cause of the fire still under investigation. time now 6:03. new this morning two big announcements from the vatican just days before the pope officially steps down. this morning britain's top catholic lyric announced he's resigning after being accused of misconduct. minutes later the pope also made a big announcement. coming up at 6:15 we will bring you a live report on all of these new developments. congress is getting back to work today before $85 billion in automatic spending cuts begin friday. the cuts are known as the sequester. they would furlough federal workers like food inspectors and airport tsa workers. meaning you'd be paying more for beef and chicken and also face delays at airports. the sequester is delayed the budget dispute between president obama and congressional republicans. >> these cuts tonight have to happen. congress can turn them off any time with just a little

compromise. >> i won't put all the blame on the president of the united states. but the president leads. the president should be calling us over somewhere. camp david, the white house, somewhere. and us sitting down and trying to avert these cuts. >> now without a compromise, major things like defense funding, unemployment benefits, and much more will also be cut. a dispute among lawmakers over records of private gun sales is holding up a bipartisan compromise when it comes to expanding background checks. requiring background checks for all firearms is a key part of the president's plan to curb gun violence. the checks are currently only required for sales at federally licensed dealers but not at private sales. a candle light vigil is being hold in pleasant hill to honor victims of the newtown school. the bell will toll 26 times to honor each of the victims killed when the gunman opened

fire on teachers and students at the elementary school in connecticut. now that vigil will be held at 6:30 tonight at the corner of gregory lane and cleveland road. right in front of city hall. people who attend also plan to show support for the president's gun control proposal. your time is 6:05. employees of yahoo have been able to unjoy a benefit that google and facebook workers have not had. now they are being told it will come to an end in a few weeks. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live. she is at yahoo headquarters now. what is going on? >> reporter: there is a lot of chatter online on blogs and twitter about this latest move from yahoo. one person on twitter wrote that ceo marissa meyer work from home ban is not what she should be doing. here's a portion of it which says quote it is critical that we are all present in our

offices. some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. that memo came out on friday. hundreds of employees are frustrated and upset because they were initially hired from the understanding they could work more flexibly. one person we spoke to this morning said that working from home ban was a bad move. >> i don't think that bringing people to work every day will increase productivity. it will increase cost on the employees side. that employers side. that will create a lot of discomfort is and hardship for the employees. >> reporter: on twitter some people are calling it a bad move and a step backwards. other companies started encouraging yahoo employees to come work for them because they have flexible work policies. the new policy takes effect in

6:14 is the time. new this morning nippon airway has canceled all of its flights until the end of may. that means they would have canceled 600 flights of its boeing 787. boeing will have to compensate airlines for canceled flights. they grounded all the dream liners last month after a series of problems. ikea is part of a food scandal after horse meat in its meet ball -- meat balls. fortunately the problem was found before any meat balls were sold. it does not appear any tainted meat balls were shipped here to the united states. the random checks of meat began across europe last month. 6:19. new this morning secretary of state john kerry is on his

first overseas trip and he has met with british prime minister. kerry will also fly to france, germany, egypt, and saudi arabia. he's also due to two to rome this week to attend a conference on the violence in syria. just days before the pope officially steps down, there is a brand new controversy in the catholic church. britain's top cardinal was forced to resign early. ktvu kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom. kyla. >> reporter: a lot of developments coming out of the vatican. let's sort through them. first the pope is supposed to meet with three top cardinals today. those three cardinals offer -- altered a 300 page report. it deals with corruption inside

the vatican. the cardinals that wrote that report says clergy took part in homosexual -- now italian media is reporting a direct tie between that report and the pope deciding to retire although he does continue to site health reasons. the pope is debating sharing that report with other cardinals or leaving that decision up to the next pope. this comes after the vatican spokesperson held a news conference a couple hours ago. britain's top cardinal is being forced into early resignation after a younger clergy claims o'brien made homosexual advances toward them. that is video from the news conference this morning. it was given in italian. right now an english speaking priest is working on a summary no english. we are working out to a u.s. conference of catholic bishops.

so far we have not heard back. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. the u.s. state department has joined the search for an oakland couple missing in south america. jamie neil and garrett hand began a bike tour of peru in november. they kept in constant contact with family members and friends through a facebook page. but those posts abruptly stopped on january 25th when they arrived in lema. memorial services are scheduled today for ten-month- old angel lagrand. sheriffs deputies found her body in a field. the discovery comes two weeks after she disappeared. her father is facing kidnapping and murder charges in her death. investigators say jesus told family members he had told

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. new details about the arrest of east bay rapper mc hammer. dublin police issued a press release saying it began as a traffic stop late thursday because the car he was driving had expired registration. he refused to exit the vehicle but after a short argument he finally got out. he was arrested for obstructing and resisting the officer.

mc hammer claims the officer is guilty of racial profiling. the bay area has become a hot spot for the illegal trade of exotic animals. remember the kay men known as mr. teeth recently made headlines when it was guarding a stash of drugs. fish and wildlife wardens say there are exotic animals everywhere you look in the bay area. they are finding snakes, hedgehogs, turtles, baby alligators, bob cats, and plenty more. >> it's pretty constant i would say. the demand for these kind of animals just kind of keeps ongoing. people are ill galty of them. the dangerousness. the uniqueness of them. >> they are making pretty decent money on selling them. it's worth a chance to them. >> buyers and sellers of exotic pets can face jail time but most of the time they are just getting a fine. let's check in with sal again. it's 6:26 right now.

february 25th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. >> we are beginning with developing news. coast guard very busy searching for four missing family members including two children. their sailboat started taking on water off the san mateo county coast. tara moriarty has been on this since 4:30 this morning. you are there to tell us what the coast guard is saying now. >> reporter: the coast forward will be deploying helicopter pretty shortly here as well as the air national guard. as we take a look at video from chopper 2 there are a couple helicopters there. we understand one of them will be deployed to the area where the people went missing. the coast guard has a couple of boats. they were able to secure a 210- foot cutter out of washington state that happened to be in the area. the family's sailboat is believed to be missing 50 miles southwest of santa cruz. last night around 4:30 this distress call came in. their 29-foot craft was taking in water and had no lifeboats

now coming up we will tell you what the coast guard wants to make sure that every family has on board you set sail. live i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. sonoma county home went up in flames over night. alex savidge is there in roanoke park with information on how much damage the fire caused and video of the flames that you will only see here on ktvu. alex. >> reporter: firefighters tell me this place has been vacant for the past three months or so. this morning investigators are still trying to reach the owner of this home who lives out of town. you can see here the place is all taped off. the fire first broke out here in what was the garage and it quickly spread to the house itself. crews came here and saw huge flames pouring from the house. this home is on the 7100 block of alma avenue. 15 fire tighters came here. they came from roanoke park. they were able to knock down the flames in just about 25 minutes. the fire destroyed the garage

and did more than $50,000 in damage. thankfully though no firefighters were injured here. but as we bring you back out here to a live picture from the scene investigators do plan to come back out here as the sun begins to rise once they get more light. they will gather more evidence out here and try to pinpoint an exact cause for this fire. i did ask a firefighter that i spoke with earlier this morning if there was any indication someone had been living here. maybe squatters in the home. he tells me it doesn't look like it because the home was all locked up. that happened just before noon yesterday in the tenderloin neighborhood. these are photos from ktvu viewer showing smoke pouring out of that building. you can see the street just completely blocked with smoke. firefighters say it appears that fire started in a

this very beautiful pier. but cruise ships are expected to use this but from about march until october this is the official headquarters of the america's cup. this basically completes phase one of the project which will allow for the building to be used for america's cups events. the finish line will not be too far from here either. ribbon cutting ceremony will take place and mayor ed lee will be here tomorrow morning around 11:30 to officially open the building. as we mentioned still a lot of construction to complete the second phase take place during the coming months which will include retail, landscaping, and finishing off the parking area at the pier. and itaipu clouds finishing the inside details of the building. officials say that once the cruise ship terminal is complete it will be a 21st century state of the art experience. but again, ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow morning at 11:30. mayor ed lee is supposed to be

here to officially open pier 27. at least this building. we are live in san francisco i'm brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. happening now a high stake civil trial for the gulf oil spill is officially under way. a federal judge from new orleans will hear several hours of opening statements by lawyers from both sides involved in the 2010 gulf oil spill that killed 11 workers. the judge not a jury will decide how much money bp will have to pay. it could face fines of $17 billion which would make it the biggest civil sign in history. investigators are stepping up their search for a suspect in the las vegas shooting that killed an aspiring rapper from oakland. they have identified harris as a suspect in the gunfight. harris fired several rounds into a ma are di that clutch was driving. harris has an extensive criminal history that includes

awhile. everybody is now below 100% and dropping fast. san jose at 74%. san francisco 83% for the season. and 88 in santa rosa. we were really doing well in october, november, and december. things have turned on a dime. the system kind of ushering in. water temps are very, very cold. 49-50 degrees. it doesn't take much to get that fog to form. 30s and 40s. frost on the rooftops. it's quiet here. down the deep south and that system in the middle of the country. there is snow on the backside of it. more. they just had some last week. this pattern will continue for the next even days. everything will be to the north or east or south of us. just not here. no sign of any rain this week. there are signs of very warm temps by the end of the week though. mostly sunny. a few high clouds. but after that burns off 250s and -- 50s and 60s. a little cooler for some.

over night in asia and europe this morning. time now 6:54. police in fremont arrested a man and woman on suspicion of carjacking. it followed a short chase and ended at the union landing shopping center with several cars hit and one person hurt. the passenger inside one of the cars that was hit was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. thousands of parolees including convicted sex offenders are taking off their court order bps monitors. despite that though there is little risk they will be sent back to prison because there is over crowding at the prison. the l.a. times reports a growing number of parolees are choosing to cut off their tracking devices and they are often freed within days or hours after being arrested for violating parole. state of california voted in 2006 to require high risk sex offenders be tracked. all u.s. special forces
